of the “Group of Friends of the ICC”
Prevention of and ending impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes: the role of the ICC in fulfilling victims’ rights and delivering reparative justice
Date: April 17, 2014
Time: 3.00-6.00 pm
Room: Trusteeship Council
(UN Secretariat building)
Background
Proposal for an annual high-level meeting in April of the “Group of Friends of the ICC” to highlight the importance of the ICC in relation to accountability, prevention and justice for victims.
April is the commemorative month of several genocides, when member states, the UN and civil society remember and honour the victims, as well as discuss ideas and strategies to prevent genocide and other atrocity crimes. It is therefore proposed that the “Group of Friends of the ICC” organizes an annual high level meeting in April to high-light the importance of the ICC in relation to accountability, prevention and justice for victims. The proposed theme for such a meeting of the “Group of Friends of the ICC” would be: “High Level Annual meeting of the “Group of Friends of the ICC”: Prevention of and Ending impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes: the role of the ICC in fulfilling victims’ rights and delivering reparative justice.” The idea is to have the same title every year and that the proposed title is broad enough to encompass many different sub-topics for the subsequent years. The title also highlights the three main focus areas of the work of the ICC namely ending impunity, prevention of atrocity crimes and providing justice for victims. The proposed sub-topic for this year’s annual meeting is Victims’ Rights and the need for reparative justice. In order to both express the commitment by the “Group of Friends of the ICC” and to be able to attract keynote speakers to the meeting, it is proposed that the annual meeting is organized as a high-level meeting.
